Human-centred mindset

People stay in charge of AI. The school has a shared vision, a named lead, fair access for every pupil and listens to pupils and parents.

  • 1.1 A shared vision for AI that keeps people in charge is agreed and communicated.
  • 1.2 A named lead with time and budget owns AI across the school.
  • 1.3 People, not AI, stay accountable for decisions about pupils and staff.
  • 1.4 Pupil and parent voice shapes the school's approach to AI.
  • 1.5 Every pupil, including those with SEND, has fair access to AI's benefits and protection from its harms.
  • 1.6 Staff use AI to support, not replace, their professional judgement.

Ethics of AI

AI is used safely and lawfully. Policy, data protection, safeguarding and academic integrity all cover AI, and governors keep watch.

  • 2.1 The school has an AI policy that staff know and follow.
  • 2.2 The acceptable-use policy covers AI for staff and pupils.
  • 2.3 Every AI tool used with pupil data has a data protection impact assessment.
  • 2.4 Safeguarding, filtering and monitoring cover AI tools.
  • 2.5 Assessment and academic-integrity rules cover AI.
  • 2.6 Governors oversee AI risk and review it at least yearly.
  • 2.7 Staff can spot biased, inaccurate or unsafe AI output and know what to do.
  • 2.8 Staff never enter personal data into tools the school hasn't approved.

AI foundations and applications

The school knows which AI tools it uses, approves new ones through one route and gives staff and pupils reliable access.

  • 3.1 A register lists every AI tool in use, its owner and its approval status.
  • 3.2 One route approves new AI tools, checking safety, data protection and value.
  • 3.3 Staff and pupils have reliable access to approved tools and devices.
  • 3.4 Staff understand how generative AI works and where it goes wrong.
  • 3.5 Staff know which tools are approved for which uses.

AI pedagogy

AI has a planned place in teaching, learning and assessment, and pupils learn to use it safely, critically and ethically.

  • 4.1 The curriculum plans where pupils learn about and with AI.
  • 4.2 Assessment is designed with AI in mind.
  • 4.3 Pupils are taught to use AI safely, critically and ethically.
  • 4.4 Teachers use AI to plan and adapt lessons and check the quality.
  • 4.5 Teachers guide pupils' use of AI in lessons.
  • 4.6 AI is used appropriately to support pupils with SEND and EAL.

AI for professional development

Every member of staff is trained, training continues by role, pilots are evaluated and staff learn from each other.

  • 5.1 Every member of staff has had a baseline AI training session.
  • 5.2 Training continues in a cycle by role, including induction for new staff.
  • 5.3 AI pilots have success criteria and are evaluated.
  • 5.4 What the school learns about AI is shared internally and with other schools.
  • 5.5 Staff use AI to reduce workload safely.
  • 5.6 Staff learn from each other about using AI.
